Nandavanathil speaks about the link between alcoholism and domestic violence
Tuesday Nov 18, 2008
Nandavanathil is a one hour film which narrates the evil of drinking and also indicates the link between alcoholism and domestic violence. The film is directed by R. Jeevanandam, a social worker. The film shows the happy life of a love-married couple in a village devastated by the husband's sudden addiction to alcohol. The protagonist, who is introduced to liquor due to peer pressure for 'celebrating' his first child's birth, gets immersed in the habit. He first loses his job due to the habit. He loses his wife, a teacher, later as she ends her life after the 'honour' of their family is lost in the village. Though she lives with domestic violence, she cannot bear the 'disgrace' she suffers after her drunken husband makes false allegations against her and beats her in front of everyone. The film ends with the couple's only male child becoming a child worker in a tea shop. Though the ending is tragic, the sequences are narrated convincingly. Two lyrical songs penned by Na.Muthukumar are sung by S.P.Balasubramaniam.
